24, August 2024 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join us on Saturday 24th August for two workshops either 10 – 1 pm or 2 to 5 pm

This course is aimed at anyone with an interest in bees and social insects and will give an overview of the honeybee colony and the work of the beekeeper. The day will not involve direct contact with bees but we are hoping to bring an enclosed observation hive to hand as well as honey harvesting.

The course will cover:

The bumblebee and honeybee through the seasons

The superorganism: the queen, the worker and the drone

The natural nest and the manmade hive
Swarms and reproduction

Pests and the beekeeper

Beekeeping myths

Harvesting honey

Beekeeping Q&A

This workshop will be held at the Windmill Community Gardens in Margate, a beautiful one acre community garden located in Dane Valley Margate, looked after and cared by the community.

This is an 18+ workshop

Wild Margate is run by Margate based artist and beekeeper Dominic Rose and a small number of colonies of honey bees kept in Cliftonville.

This workshop is a part of the Windmill Community Gardens Community Roots Programme which is a new project which has been funded by funded by Thanet District Council as part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and we are extremely grateful to have this opportunity to collaborate with local facilitators and volunteers, to become a Community Hub for learning and wellbeing.
