Who are we?

We are Windmill Community Gardens Margate, a thriving community garden and market garden located in Dane Valley, Margate. We were established in 2004, when a group of local families requested  “Somewhere safe to grow food with their children”, and that is when we transformed the then derelict wasteland into the now well established Community Garden, our Market Garden (located behind Drapers Mill Primary School) was converted in 2008.

Our community garden is a truly magical place, and we would love for you to come and visit. It features a bountiful community growing space, accessible pathway, forest garden, poly tunnel, play area, wildlife habitats and so much more. Our market garden is a chemical-free food growing space that includes no-dig beds growing vegetables, herbs, and some fruit all year round, we also have some thriving Bee Hives. Through this site we supply our weekly vegetable bag scheme, weekly market stalls, and local restaurants throughout the year.

Our overall vision is to improve the physical and mental health, wellbeing, and community cohesion of our visitors through educational and environmental activities as well as offering access to locally grown, chemical-free food.

Weekly Veg Bag Scheme

Our weekly veg bag scheme is a great way to enjoy fresh, seasonal, and chemical-free produce while directly supporting Windmill Community Gardens and the people who use it. By signing up, you’ll help us to offer free places at our community workshops and events, create opportunities for volunteers, and keep our market and community garden thriving all year round

What to expect this January

Happy New Year from all at Windmill Community Gardens.

Along with our usual weekly groups, market stalls, gardening clubs we will be hosting

Wassailing Join us in our orchard as we sing and make noise to the spirits around our fruit trees, to ward off bad spirits from the orchard whilst also pleasing the spirits of the fruit trees, to ensure a bountiful crop of fruit in the year ahead. Open to all ages

Green Woodworking we will be joined by the wonderful Thomas and Sean for two beginner woodworking workshops this January, at both workshops learn the essentials of safe knife skills and effective techniques whilst creating something to take home with you. This workshop is perfect for those curious about green woodworking or looking to build foundational carving skills in a supportive environment.

Gardening Workshops start the year learning through hands on gardening sessions with our team, this month we have two to choose from including Nature Friendly Gardening and Fruit Tree Pruning 101.

See Me Grow This FREE community support session for families with a child under 5 and a disabled or neurodivergent family member (no diagnosis needed). We offer support or just a friendly natter in our garden for a small number of families with play and a playworker available.
