Accessibility Information
We are working to make Windmill Community Gardens Margate a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone, including visitors with physical and invisible disabilities and those with aids.
Below is an overview of our current access conditions and ongoing plans for improvement.
This page will be updated as we make progress.
Community Garden Site
Arrival and Parking
- Public parking is available on Dane Valley Road, and some on College Road.
- There is currently no disabled parking available.
- Access to the Community Gardens site can be made via 3 tarmac access slopes, all three of which have a gradient descending to our community garden site, the most prominent from Dane Valley Road.
Entrance and Exterior
- The pathways from roadside curb (both Dane Valley Road and College Road) are of Tarmac and lead directly to the boundary of the community gardens.
- The flooring underfoot is transitional from tarmac to soft bark to hard plastic landscaping membrane under gravel.
- The surface can be uneven and difficult to navigate with wheels.
Pathways throughout the site
- Pathway surfaces include Bark, Gravel, Hard plastic landscaping membrane under gravel and Tarmac. Which can be difficult and uneven to navigate for wheelchairs and walking aids.
- In addition some pathways/route for example from the Barn to the Forest Garden is consistent of plastic landscaping membrane with grass growing through. This has a tendency to be challenging when wet or muddy conditions.
- Our main pathways can be narrower than what is recommended for wheelchair access – the typical width being 110cm.
We are looking to upgrade paths over time with firmer, more navigable materials.
If you are in need of assistance please ask, sometimes our foliage can grow over our paths and if you come across this please do ask our team who will be happy to stake up or cut back anything that is causing an obstruction.
Raised Beds
At the entrance to the Community Garden we have some raised beds, these are designed with wheelchair use in mind, and are of a good height for seated gardening.
We are aware that the pathway leading to these beds are in need of updating as currently they are accessed via a grassed path.
Market Stall
- Our Market Stall (held weekly on a Thursday from 11 – 4pm) is located next to our prominant poly tunnel.
- Access to this is via a gravel pathway from our main entrance which stretches to just infront of our market stall structure.
- Infront of the Market Stall is a large open space. The pathway here is transitional from gravel to grass flooring towards the left hand side of the stall.
Polytunnel
Our Polytunnel is located centrally in the Community Garden
- Access from the entrance gate is via the min gravel pathway
- Within the poly tunnel there is a large red bricked paved section, this spans half of the polytunnel.
- During some sessions (in particular during the winter months) this area has tables and chairs as a shelter from the weather.
- The back section of the polytunnel is laid to growing beds and small bark laid pathways which are not accessible by a wheelchair.
Outdoor Sink and hand washing facilities.
We have an outdoor sink located between our green office container and accessible toilet.
- The sink height is within accessible range of 75cm.
- Access to this sink can be tight due to a structural post – 70cm wide gap – which we are now aware is not accessible by most wheelchairs.
We are planning a wider space and more accessible set up.
Accessible Toilet
Our Accessible Compost toilet is reserved for those with disabilities including invisible disabilities, and it also includes a nappy changing facility.
- The accessible toilet is located past the poly tunnel on the left hand side of the gate – this is signposted.
- The accessible toilet is step free, and accessed via a ramp designed to accommodate wheelchairs including turning/maneuvering.
- Inside the toilet which is access via a lockable door, there is space to turn and leave a wheelchair.
- We have installed a support bar for toilet access.
Classroom Container (Floral Frontage)
This container is under a lengthy redevelopment, currently the below are key points.
- There is a ramp leading up to this container, this has a slight change in height but can negotiated once the top of the ramp is reached.
- We have a large raised and under cover pergola structure directly infront of the container, this is laid to wood and is easily navigatable. NOTE: there is a drop to ground level around the whole pergola structure.
- The entrance door to the container is 70cm wide and narrower than standard wheelchair access.
Future/current plans: we are awaiting materials to complete the transformation of this container which we hope to include bifold accessible door.
Things to keep in mind!
- Surfaces may be uneven or soft in many areas and are changeable with the weather.
- Not all paths and entry points currently meet full accessibility standards.
- Assistant is always available and may be helpful in navigating certain parts of the site.
- Improvements are actively underway, and we more than welcome feedback!
