Are you looking for a local volunteering opportunity? Whether you’re looking to gain experience in habitat surveys, you would like to get involved with food growing and conservation, or you’d like to help maintain the gardens for our visitors, we’d love to hear from you.

New volunteers are always welcome.

Would you like to Volunteer for us?

Volunteers are so important to the work of the Windmill Community Gardens Margate and form a large part of the onsite team. Our volunteers bring skills, knowledge and energy to make Windmill Community Gardens Margate a brilliant place to visit, as well as working towards enhancing our natural environment.

We have two regular, weekly Gardening Clubs which are a great way to come and see the gardens if its your first time or just get stuck in and get a feel of what the gardens can offer:

Thursdays from 10 – 4 pm – Weekly, throughout the year.

Saturdays from 1 – 3 pm – excluding the 5th Saturday of the month, throughout the year.

No previous experience needed, all tools are provided. Or simply come along to speak to a member of our team to find out more.

Volunteer Hours

We value the important work that our volunteers do, and celebrate the time that they contribute to the gardens. Between May and December 2025 our volunteers contributed an incredible total of 2380 hours to helping our community and market garden thrive. Thank you!

Market Garden Volunteer Opportunities

The following roles are quite specific, but we know that some people would like more general opportunities too, if this is you please do get in touch!

Composting Champion

Help manage and improve our community composting scheme, and learn about how to make beautiful compost. This will involve learning how to use our Ridan hot composters to transform food waste quickly, and how to layer larger open heaps. We have a small worm farm too. New ideas and outreach to source local materials are absolutely welcome!

Biodiversity Booster and Monitor

We try to manage our gardens to both grow food, but also support wildlife wherever possible. We would love help implementing ideas throughout the year that support wildlife, as well as some monitoring and recording of species present in the gardens. This could be caring for our ponds, creating dead hedges/hibernaculums, setting up/ managing camera traps, recording birds, searching for and identifying insects. Your own passions and expertise can absolutely help inform what we do!

Market Garden Helpers

On Wednesday mornings we welcome anyone who wants to get stuck in with some harvesting, weighing and packing to help with our veg bags. A valuable contribution, helping provide fresh healthy food to the community!
Wednesdays and Thursdays are also open for volunteers who want to help care for our crops, especially in the busy spring and summer periods. This will involve walking the site to check on the plants, weeding, watering, feeding. This is a great way to gain some practical experience in small scale market gardening, and learn about seasonality of food.

Community Garden and office Opportunities

The following roles are quite specific, but we know that some people would like more general opportunities too, if this is you please do get in touch!

Fundraising Support

Play a vital part in keeping our community gardens growing strong. This role is ideal if you enjoy shaping ideas, sharing stories, or creating impact behind the scenes. You could support grant applications, come up with imaginative fundraising ideas, help run events, or help spread the word – all helping to sustain the gardens and the community we support.

Market Stall Helper

We have an exciting opportunity to grow and develop our market offering, and we’d love volunteers to help! On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, our market stall is right here in the heart of our community gardens, surrounded by volunteers, visitors, and food growing in action. Help harvest, set up the stall, sell produce or plants, and chat with visitors about what we grow and why it matters. This is a perfect role if you enjoy being part of a vibrant community, meeting people, and seeing the direct impact of your efforts. Every conversation and sale helps the gardens thrive and connects more people with the joy of fresh, local food.

Plant Stall and Growing Support

Would you like to help contribute to our community project’s income while nurturing life from seed to sale? Join us in the gardens and get hands-on with seed sowing, potting on, watering, labelling, and caring for plants, as well as helping run our plant stall. This is a wonderful role for anyone who loves watching things grow, sharing plants with the community, and seeing the direct impact of their care. Your efforts will not only help our gardens flourish but also support the wider work of the project.

Weekly Gardening Clubs

Our weekly gardening clubs are at the forefront of what we do and helps us to maintain a thriving garden and Market Garden all year round. Gardening club is open to all ages and skill levels to come together and get involved in sustainable gardening. Tasks are varied and can include seed sowing, harvesting for our market stall, or learning about our no-dig methods and composting systems. Each of our gardening clubs offer hands on experience that support wellbeing and shared learning.

Particpants of our gardening club help to maintain the garden, can participate in our workshops that help to promote sustainable growth and once a month attend our Market Garden where we grow produce for our weekly veg bag scheme.
Most important of all this group is a social space - somewhere to meet neighbours, learn new skills and make a positive impact on the community and environment.
